Signs that Your Baby is Hungry

As a new mom it you might be advised by your lactation consultant or doctor to breast-feed on demand. But how do you know that your baby is hungry?

Yes, your baby might cry and if nothing else works like patting on the back, walking around the room or distracting you might ultimately figure out that your baby might be hungry. However, crying is a late sign of hunger. You should breastfeed before your child starts crying.

So how do you cater your child’s hunger before he/she starts crying? Look for the following signs:

A newborn child may need to be fed every 2-3 hours. However, each child is different and may need to be fed more or less. So, be aware of the signs that indicate that your baby is hungry.

When babies are hungry:


They will snuggle against your breasts

Make sucking actions or sounds

Put their hands into their mouths

They will turn their head towards anything that strokes their cheeks or mouth.
This behavior is called rooting
