Signs of Macronutrient Overdose to Watch Out For

While it is necessary to provide your child with essential nutrients like iron, sodium, etc, ensure that they get adequate amounts of macronutrients like carbs, fats, and proteins. However, you must watch out for the signs of an overdose of these macronutrients. If given in excess quantities, they can have serious consequences on your child’s health.

Excess of Fats

Fats are of two types- saturated and unsaturated fats. You need to be watchful about saturated fats. An excess of these can lead to obesity and heart diseases by elevating several risk factors. Saturated fats increase cholesterol levels in the body, which then builds up in the arteries causing atherosclerosis. Also, saturated fats are a rich source of calories. Feeding your child high-fat foods can increase the total calorie intake. This leads to an excessive weight gain that further stresses the heart.

Excess of Carbs

Carbs are present in almost every food items. However, high-carb food items like sugar, pasta, rice and deep-fried items must be kept in check in your child’s meal plan. Excessive carbs can lead to breaking down of glucose, a simple form of sugar, in the body. When this is released into the bloodstream, it increases the level of blood sugar. In response to this, the pancreas secretes insulin in excess, which leads to weight gain and hypoglycaemia. Further, more carbs are converted to fats which can lead to obesity and therefore resulting in stress on the heart.

Low-carb food products: eggs, chicken, vegetables like tomatoes, broccoli and spinach, apples, oranges and strawberries.

Excess of Proteins

Although a child needs protein to grow and develop properly, excessive proteins can lead to serious health problems like calcium losses, kidney problems, diarrhoea, and dehydration. To regulate the same, make sure your child’s meal plan has adequate protein-rich food like meat, fish, tofu eggs or dairy products.

Though the quantity of food plays an important role in your child’s meal plan, the quality of food should not be neglected.  Along with feeding your child sufficiently, make sure that your child consumes the right nutrients. Add a variety of food-types like fruits, vegetables, meat, dairy products and nuts as a part of the diet plan. In the end, it is about providing your child with a wholesome diet to gain all the required nutrients in right amounts.
