During the first few months, you may get headaches due to changes in your hormone levels along with an increase in blood volume and circulation. Towards the latter half of pregnancy, changes in your posture and tension from carrying the extra weight of your baby might trigger a headache.
An old saying ’prevention is better than cure’, fits here appropriately. The following are some tips that can help prevent a headache.
Dehydration is one of the most common causes of headache during pregnancy, drink adequate water (at least 8 to 10 glasses of water per day) and keep yourself hydrated.
- Avoid Headache Triggers. A simple way of doing this is by keeping a diary of all your activities and foods that tend to trigger a headache. Do this for several days. This will help pinpoint your headache triggers which you can try and avoid.
- Try Maintaining A Proper Sleep Schedule. Tiredness and lack of sleep contribute to headaches. Make it a point to go to bed and wake up every day at the same time.
- Eat Smaller, Frequent Meals Throughout the Day. Headaches are also caused due to fluctuations in blood glucose levels. Regular meals will maintain your blood sugar level at an even level and can therefore reduce the risk of getting a headache.
