Motherhood is a blessing and the joy of it begins when a tiny heart starts beating inside you. As a to-be-mother, you should be aware of certain pregnancy precautions.

Here are some dos and don’ts during pregnancy which will help you and your baby to stay safe and healthy:

Eat a healthy diet during pregnancy including fruits, vegetables, whole grains, pulses and legumes, nuts and lean meats.
Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated and support the baby inside you.
Take your iron and folic acid supplements regularly. Consult your doctor before taking any nutrient supplements.

Always consult with your doctor before you start or stop any medicine. Prescription, over-the-counter drugs and herbal medicine all can be harmful for your baby.

Stay active and follow regular exercise regime which keeps you fit and may improve your ability to cope with labor pain.
Try to get sound sleep at least for 7 to 9 hours every night. Make a habit of resting on your left side which is known to help blood flow to you and your baby and prevent swelling.
Mothers-to-be should avoid smoking, drinking alcohol and taking illegal drugs.
Smoking increases the risk of miscarriage, preterm birth and infant death while alcohol and illegal drugs can also harm your baby.
Second trimester (i.e. between 14-28 weeks) is the ideal time to travel during pregnancy. Avoid sitting for longer time during car or air travel.
Do not forget to wear seat belt while travelling in a car or flight. Always discuss with your doctor before you are planning for a trip.
Protect yourself and your baby from various environmental risks including exposures to toxic substances, (chemicals, cleaners, insecticides) microbial infections
and even pets.
Routine check up is recommended during pregnancy and do not hesitate to call your doctor if you are facing any difficulty.
