What Happens if Any Food is Given to the Baby?

Unnecessary Calories - Not all foods are good for your baby. Check labels of processed foods before using. Some of the processed foods are high in sugar or fat and may provide unnecessary calories. Eating these foods can make the baby overweight or obese.

Desensatisation of taste buds

Your baby has started eating solid food . It does not mean that you can give anything and everything to your baby to eat. Foods given to the baby should be based on his or her developmental stage and growth needs.

Doctors recommend foods that are age-appropriate, safe, adequate and nutrient-packed. Home-made foods and fortified meals along with mother’s milk can help fulfill your baby’s nutrient intake.

Desensatisation of taste buds

Your baby’s taste sensitivity is yet developing. Strongly flavoured or excessively salty foods can desensitize your baby’s taste buds. Hence, avoid junk foods which are high in salt or sugar.

Too much of Salt - Babies who are given salty foods will show preference for salty taste in their later years. This may predispose them to many health problems in adulthood.

Choking Risk - Foods like popcorn, whole grapes, berries, nuts, candies and chips may choke your baby .

Food Poisoning and Allergy- Outside food may cause food poisoning in your baby if it is not cooked under hygienic conditions. If too many foods are given at a time and if your baby shows some allergic reaction, then it would be difficult to find out which food caused the allergy.

Giving nutritious, wholesome food to your baby ensures proper nourishment and promotes healthy growth and development.

So, resist the urge to put anything and everything in your baby’s mouth.
