Is My Toddler Eating Enough

Are you a mother of a toddler worrying about whether your toddler is eating enough? Are you concerned that your little one is fussy about eating and is picking his/her food?

Thursday, May 11th, 2017

The amount that your toddler eats at a time may differ from how much another toddler eats.

Your child requires a healthy, balanced and varied diet for growth and development. Since your child has a smaller stomach capacity than you, he/she needs to eat smaller amounts more often.

Tips to ensure that your toddler is eating enough:

Offer your child three meals and two snacks during the course of the day.

Set regular meal and snack times.

Offer food from all the five food groups, namely cereals; pulses and legumes; milk, milk products; fruits and vegetables; and fats and oils. For snacks, offer food from at least two of these food groups.

Limit your toddler’s juice intake to about 180 mL per day. Too much liquid may reduce your baby’s hunger.

Don’t offer your toddler too much food. The portion size should be one-fourth or one-fifth the size of an adult portion.

Avoid forcing your toddler to eat. Avoid power battles over food.

Make the food easy for your toddler to eat: cut into bit-sized portions; make foods soft and moist; and serve the food at the right temperature (neither too hot nor too cold).

Do not be disheartened if your toddler says no to a food. Offer the same food at a different time.

Make sure that your toddler has meals together with the whole family.

Children usually eat when they are hungry and stop when they are full. Make sure that no food group is missed out for a long time so that your toddler is eating enough.
