Following are the mental or cognitive developmental milestones that your baby achieves between 6 and 8 months of age:
As your baby is in the sitter stage, you need to baby-proof your house if you have not done yet to make it a safe place for him or her to move. Clear out small objects, such as coins, buttons, etc.
- Shows curiosity about things.
- Tries to get things that are out of his or her reach or looks around at things nearby.
- Brings things to his or her mouth.
- Exhibits some feelings like fear. Begins to fear strangers.
- Can realize that if an object is dropped, it needs to be picked up, otherwise it will be still there.
- Can recognize his or her parents.
- Imitates actions or simple things and anticipates repetition.
- Knowing and recognizing these milestones or stages will help you to do activities on your own to promote your baby’s mental development.
Nutrients, especially micronutrients, are important building blocks for your child’s brain development. Adequate micronutrient intake, especially after six months of age, is crucial to ensure your child’s growth to his/her full potential. If the regular family food is provided as the only or sole source of complementary food after six months of age, it may not offer sufficient micronutrients especially if the food predominantly comprises legumes and grains as these usually fall short of adequate amount of iron and zinc. Thus a child’s diet should comprise food that can fulfill the increased nutrition needs. Therefore, include different food groups and nutrient-dense fortified food also as a part of your child’s balanced diet to provide all the required nutrition which may help promote optimal mental growth and development.
