Fever is elevation of temperature above the normal range . Every baby gets fever at some point of time, but it does not always imply that the baby is severely ill. Fever can be due to some infection, caused by either bacteria or a virus, or some underlying illness. In most cases a fever is not dangerous.
Immediately Seek Doctor’s Advice: You should immediately consult your doctor if your baby is:
- less than 6 months old and has a temperature of 101° F (38.3°C) or higher
- excessively cranky, fussy or irritable
- very lethargic and does not respond
- persistently wheezing or coughing
- creating concern with a rash or signs of some other illness
- suffering from fever for more than 48 hours
Home Remedies for Recuperation from Fever
If your baby has fever but is otherwise happy, eating, drinking and playing, she may not need medical help. There are few things that you can do at home, so that your baby recuperates fast.
Minimize Exertion: Make sure that your baby is calm and well rested. Don’t allow the baby to exert.
Maximize Comfort: Dress your baby in lightweight clothes and remove extra blankets and clothing so that excess heat in the body can dissipate. This helps in lowering the body temperature. But make sure that your baby is not shivering as that can cause the temperature to rise again.
Maximize Fluid Intake: Give plenty of fluids to your baby. Fluids help prevent dehydration and also maintain the electrolyte balance of the body.
Monitor Temperature: Keep a check on your baby’s body temperature. If the temperature rises together with a fall in activity level and appetite, immediately consult the doctor.

Managing your baby’s fever can be very simple. Following some basic nutrition tips can boost the recovery process of your baby.
Maximize Fluid Intake: Give ample amounts of fluids to your baby post one year. Soups, unsweetened fruit and vegetable juices, sweet or salty buttermilk, lemonade, custard, smoothies, coconut water etc. help keep the fluid levels in the body high. If your baby is on breastfeed, then try and feed her more often.
Small Meals at Regular Intervals: Give small feeds at regular intervals to the baby. Feeding your baby with breast milk or with small servings of semisolid food like blended khichdi with curd or butter, stews, gruels etc. every two hours is a good approach. Since babies experience reduced appetite during fever, force-feeding is not recommended. It is better to increase the time-gap between feeds so that the food is easily digested.
Soft Diet is the Best Choice: Make sure that the food that you give to your baby is of soft consistency, bland and easily digestible. Gruels, rice cereal and milk, soft fruits like banana, papaya, orange, mosambi, melons, stewed apple or pears, soft or mashed khichdi with curd, mashed curd rice or softly boiled and mashed vegetable /vegetable purees are good options.
Fight Away the Fever.
Your baby’s behaviour is a better indicator of how ill she is. A baby with a mild infection can have a high fever, while a baby with a severe infection may have no fever at all. Appropriate diet, optimum comfort, ample rest, timely medical advise (if needed) and doses of abundant love are the key ingredients that you need to feed your little one with, so that she recovers quickly.
