Your child’s bowel movements tell you about child’s health problems or change of food if any. After all what goes inside, shows outside!

Track your Child’s Poop to know his or her Health:

Normal Condition: Breastfed child will have stools which are mustard-yellow in colour and have seed like particles. Children fed with alternate feeds have tan or yellow poop. The consistency can range from very soft, loose to runny or firm depending on the foods your child is eating.

Dehydration: Hard or very dry stools indicate that your child may be dehydrated.

Constipation: Although your child might become red while pushing bowel, constipated child will have difficulty in passing stools and will poop less than 3 times in a week.2 The stools may be hard, dry and sometimes contain little blood. Transition from exclusive breastfeeding to complementary feeding can also cause constipation in your child.

Some babies are intolerant to certain foods and may cause diarrhea as a symptom. While giving new foods, introduce one at a time to know whether your child can tolerate the food.

Diarrhea: Your child may pass more than one stool per feeding and their poop will be watery. Breastfed babies rarely have diarrhea. Conditions like lactose intolerance, celiac disease, irritable bowel syndrome, food allergy or infections can also lead to diarrhea.

Lactose intolerance: Some children may have difficulty in digesting lactose present in milk. In such cases, poop will be green in colour.

Green Stools: When there is an oversupply of milk, children tend to get too much of foremilk which is rich in lactose. Offering one breast at a time will ensure that the child gets fat-rich hind milk. Green stool with no other disease condition should be considered as normal.

Consult your doctor if you observe any change in your child’s stools and frequency. Child’s nappy tells whether your child is happy!
