The common bowel problems toddlers can have are constipation and diarrhoea.
Bothersome Constipation
Your child can be constipated if he/she passes poop less often than the normal routine or strains to pass stools or has hard and dry stools. To overcome constipation
Encourage your child to have a wholesome diet, plenty of water and adequate physical activity to ensure healthy bowel habits.
Offer foods that are high in fibre (whole cereals, vegetables, pulses and fruits like apple, banana and guava).
Encourage your child to drink plenty of water and fluids.
Get your toddler used to a regular routine and involve him/her in exercises and outdoor games.
Difficult Diarrhoea
Does your toddler’s poop flow more easily? Is it more frequent and watery? Then most likely, he or she is suffering from diarrhoea. Diarrhoea is most often caused by germs such as viruses, bacteria and parasites.
During diarrhoea, your toddler can lose fluids very quickly. So it is very important that you give good food and plenty of fluids to your child. Also, offer your child oral rehydration salts (ORS), rice water, tender coconut water or salty-sweet lime juice.
Diarrhoea is never a good thing. It can be a cause of concern if your child frequently suffers from it.
Encourage healthy bowel habits
To help your child have healthy bowel habits, encourage him or her to eat nutritious foods, drink plenty of water and be physically active. Teach your child not to hold back his bowel movement and explain to your child that it is necessary to empty his/her poop.
