These foods may provide energy, but sadly just in the form of empty calories. Not just that, most of these foods use a sweetener called HFCS in place of sugar.

Encourage your child to choose healthy snacks such as nuts, trail mix, sprouts, fruits and discourage readymade processed foods that may contain high fructose corn syrup.

What is HFCS?

  • HFCS stands for High Fructose Corn syrup. HFCS is a liquid sweetener, which is used as a cheaper alternative to table sugar in many food and drinks we come across in the market.
  • It is made up glucose and fructose just like our table sugar. HFCS is commonly used to sweeten soft drinks, fruit juices and other processed foods.

Is it bad for your child’s health?

  • Scientists think that childhood obesity is on the rise because of increased use of HFCS containing soft drinks, fruit juices and carbonated beverages by children.
  • Obesity and overweight might lead to early development of type 2 diabetes, heart disease and liver diseases in your child.
  • In the long run, high intake of HFCS may affect your kid’s cognitive development and academic performance.

However, some scientists oppose this view, leaving you confused about what is right and what is not for your child.

Although evidence on HFCS dangers remains inconclusive, one thing is confirmed that HFCS provides empty calories and gives no other nutrient to you kid. So, it is better to limit the intake of foods containing HFCS.

Try to encourage healthy diet and discourage packaged and processed foods to keep HFCS intake to the minimum.
