A multiple pregnancy asks for some precautions.

A multiple pregnancy carries risks for both the mother and the baby. It’s always good to know about them and take the necessary precautions.

Twins may be born prematurely. Normally, you deliver your twins at 36 weeks, contrary to mothers with single babies who deliver at 39 weeks.

Chances of early labor increase. Multiple pregnancy increases the chances of a preterm/early labor due to which babies may also be born prematurely. Premature babies are very vulnerable and their weak health may impact them throughout their life. However, advancements in medical sciences have increased the chances of better health and survival for premature babies through careful monitoring and continued hospitalization.

Increased physical strain and emotional stress. Motherspregnant with two or more babies have to undergo more physical strain and emotional stress than normal. The key is to stay calm and strengthen the body to sustain the increased stress.

Mothersmay acquire gestational diabetes. As a pregnant mother, the hormone level in your body shoots up to support the babies you are carrying. The increase in hormones makes it difficult to produce and process optimum levels of insulin. This maylead to gestational diabetes.

High risk complications in the placenta. Mothers of multiples may have two kinds of placentas. A single placenta shared by twins or more/multiple placentas. Mothers of twins have a higher risk of suffering complications in the placenta, such as placenta previa(placenta grows in the lower part of the uterus) and placenta abruption(separation of placenta from the site of implantation before delivery).

Placental complications can be very risky for mothers which may result in hemorrhages during pregnancy or during delivery.

Pregnancy Induced Hypertension. A mother of multiples mayhave her blood pressure as high as 140/90. But anything beyond that can be indicative of a condition called Pregnancy Induced Hypertension. PIH coupled with proteinuriacan lead to preeclampsia.

Mothersneed to be careful of Preeclampsia. Preeclampsia in mothers of multiples is caused by elevated blood pressures. Also, your urine may show signs of protein, in a condition known as proteinuria.Preeclampsia needs to be monitored very carefully. If it gets severe, it may cause serious complications like kidney failure, seizures or stroke.

Preventive measures that make things easier.

You may be a perfectly healthy mother of multiples and do not need to worry about any of the risks mentioned, some precautions you need to take:

Take mandatory prenatal and antenatal tests. You must get your compulsory prenatal and antenatal tests done on time, as it’s only these tests that can tell you effectively if you or your baby stand any risk.

Meet your doctor regularly. . You must meet your doctor regularly to be able to monitor your situation carefully.Try not to miss your doctor’s appointment

Eat a healthy balanced diet. Make sure that you have a healthy, balanced and nutrient rich diet inclusive of proteins, folic acid, calcium, vitamin A, iron, iodine and essential fatty acids.

Exercise moderately. The larger bulge in you tummy must not stop you from going for your regular walks and exercise routines, though any physical activity that you want to start must be done after consulting your doctor.

Relieve yourself of stress and stay calm. Keep yourself as calm and cheerful as possible. Retain energy, because your little ones are going to demand a lot of it from you, and you are going to find yourself drained sooner than usual.

Steps to avoid complications.

In spite of all the precautions you take, you may still be at risk of some of the complications. You need to monitor your and your baby’s condition carefully.

Regularly monitor your blood pressure. You have to get your blood pressure checked regularly during your pregnancy, especially if you have pregnancy induced hypertension (PIH). If your case is too severe the doctor may suggest early delivery of the babies. Otherwise, try to be calm and healthy in body and mind as much as possible.

Complications should be monitored carefully. In case of preeclampsia and placental complications, regular monitoring and early diagnosis can make a lot of difference.

Multiple pregnancies are obviously an occasion for joy, but make sure you take extra care of yourself and your little ones and listen to your doctor.
