Now your baby is almost one and is able to stand or walk. Don’t be surprised if your baby walks over and bring his or her favourite book to you for reading out.

Here are Some Tips to Read a Book to Your Little One:

Get the Right Book

Grab a book with objects that your child can identify and point to. Your baby will love flip-flap books and may get excited on finding objects hidden underneath. Your baby may also enjoy books showing daily activities such as meal time, bed time and play time.

Read Slowly and Expressively

Avoid reading a book in a hurry. Read books slowly and ensure that your child has understood everything you said. Children listen carefully when you read books using different expressions, gestures, and voices. For example, if you say ‘lion’, make a ‘roaring’ sound or if you are talking about a ‘train’, make the sound of it.

Have Fun

To encourage reading, keep one or two books in your child’s toy basket or on a shelf that is easily accessible to your baby.

Make reading sessions interactive and fun-filled by using puppets or finger plays. Use your child’s name during these activities instead of the character’s name in the book.

Repetitive Reading

Children learn words by repetitive reading and your child may ask you to read the same book again and again. So don’t get tired of reading the same book!

Sitting not Compulsory

Your child has just started standing or walking and is exploring this new activity. So don’t wait until your child sits down. Read a book while he or she is moving around or during bedtime or when he or she scribbles in the colouring book.

Read a book to your baby. A book is a friend for a lifetime!
