You will need to go to a clinic to get the OGTT test done. At first, a blood sample will be taken from a vein in your arm. You will be then asked to drink a sweet liquid containing a measured amount of glucose (usually 75 g) at once. It is important that you drink all of the liquid. Blood samples will then be taken again every 30–60 minutes after you drink the solution for a period of 3 hours.

What Will the Test Results Tell?

If more than one of the blood glucose readings is higher than normal, you will be diagnosed with gestational diabetes. Abnormal blood glucose levels include:

Prepare to stay in the clinic where you are undergoing the OGTT for at least 3-4 h.

  • Fasting >95 mg/dL
  • 1 hour after drinking the glucose solution >180 mg/dL
  • 2 hours after drinking the glucose solution >155 mg/dL
  • 3 hours after drinking the glucose solution >140 mg/dL

For most women with gestational diabetes, the diabetes goes away soon after delivery. However, even if diabetes goes away, about 50% of the women have chances of developing type 2 diabetes later on, in their life.
