The first step in monitoring your weight is to find out your body mass index (BMI) which helps you find out if you are underweight, normal weight, overweight or obese.

Your body mass index (BMI) is calculated by using a simple formula that requires your weight and height:

Body mass index (BMI)=

Body weight (in kg)/height (in m2)

BMI before pregnancy (kg/m2)

Category

<18.5

Underweight

18.5–24.9

Normal weight

25.0–29.9

Overweight or obese

*Guideline recommended by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Govt of India.

Height in meters


5 feet = 1.52

5.3 feet = 1.62

5.6 = 1.7

5.1 feet = 1.55

5.4 feet = 1.65

5.7 = 1.74

5.2 feet = 1.58

5.5 feet = 1.68

5.8 = 1.77

For example:

If anyone’s body weight is 50 kg and height is 5 feet 3 inches, then her  BMI will be:

=50/ (1.62)2

=19.05 which falls in the category of normal weight.
