Your body mass index (BMI) is calculated by using a simple formula that requires your weight and height:
Body mass index (BMI)=
Body weight (in kg)/height (in m2)
BMI before pregnancy (kg/m2) | Category |
<18.5 | Underweight |
18.5–24.9 | Normal weight |
25.0–29.9 | Overweight or obese |
*Guideline recommended by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Govt of India.
Height in meters
5 feet = 1.52 | 5.3 feet = 1.62 | 5.6 = 1.7 |
5.1 feet = 1.55 | 5.4 feet = 1.65 | 5.7 = 1.74 |
5.2 feet = 1.58 | 5.5 feet = 1.68 | 5.8 = 1.77 |
For example:
If anyone’s body weight is 50 kg and height is 5 feet 3 inches, then her BMI will be:
=50/ (1.62)2
=19.05 which falls in the category of normal weight.
