Micronutrients are vital especially during the early stages of infancy. At such stages, adequate nutrition is must since the demand for nutrients is high. Micronutrients like Iron, Zinc, Iodine, Vitamin A, B, C and D are some of the essential nutrients necessary during developmental stages. We discuss some of the micronutrients needed to prevent hidden hunger.

1. Iron

Iron participates in the formation of haemoglobin that supplies oxygen to muscles and tissues. Oxygen is necessary for carrying out metabolic processes and the generation of energy. In the absence of Iron, your playful and energetic infant will suffer from tiredness and fatigue. The supply of oxygen to distant parts of the body is crucial to maintaining vigour and vitality. Iron performs this function by forming a complex with haemoglobin, an essential protein found in red blood cells. Iron is critical in the development of the brain and the nervous system. It ensures the smooth functioning of brain cells, regulates key metabolic process in the brain and helps in the process of learning and memory.

2. Vitamin A

Vitamin A is essential for the development of healthy eye-sight, body growth and development. Vitamin A has an indispensable role in maintaining an efficient immune system. Vitamin is necessary for the production of white blood cells. The white blood cells form the first line of defence in our bodies. They identify pathogens and foreign invaders and systematically neutralises the threat. Vitamin A also protects organs by helping in the formation of the lining of the eye, respiratory organs, urinary and intestinal tracks.

3. Calcium

Calcium is one of the factors that stabilize blood pressure and participates in the process of blood clotting. Calcium helps in the formation and maintenance of healthy bones and teeth and directly affects the movement of muscles. It is also essential for effective functioning of the nervous system.

4. Zinc

Zinc forms an important part of all active enzymes. Enzymes are proteins that participate in almost all the metabolic processes. From the generation of energy from food to cell growth and division─ enzymes are at the heart of these processes. In the absence of Zinc, metabolic processes would come to a halt, leading to fatal consequences. Besides metabolic processes, Zinc helps in keeping the immune system effective. Also, Zinc has an important role in the process of wound healing and keeping the skin healthy.

5. Vitamin D

Vitamin helps in the formation of strong bones. It does with the help of Calcium. This is the reason why both, Vitamin D and Calcium are important for stronger bone formation. Vitamin D is also necessary for the regular functioning of muscles. The contraction and extension of muscles require Vitamin D. Along with function in bone development and muscle movement, Vitamin D maintains a healthy immune system necessary to combat infections and diseases.

6. Vitamin C

An essential Vitamin, it used in the production of collagen, the most abundant protein in the body. It is found in skin, muscles, tendons, cartilage, blood vessels. Vitamin C also promotes the formation of cells that incorporate Calcium into the bones. Vitamin C is extremely important for your infant due to its wide range of functions
