Changing diapers is one of the most time consuming chores for new mothers. Diaper hygiene plays an important role in preventing your baby from infections and skin irritations.

Maintain Diaper Hygiene. It is essential to keep your baby's private parts dry and clean. You must change your baby’s diaper every 4-5 hours or whenever she wets or soils it. If you do not change it immediately, then urine or faeces combined with bacteria can give her a nappy rash. As the baby grows, you can increase the time that she spends in one diaper, depending upon the dry hours that she can spend.

Simple Steps to Change Your Baby’s Diaper.

Here are some useful tips that can help you ascertain proper hygiene and safety of your baby during diaper change:

  • Always wash your hands before and after every diaper change
  • Use a soft wet cloth, cotton swab/balls or baby wipes to clean your baby's bottom
  • Be very gentle while cleaning or washing your baby, do not irritate your baby’s skin or else it may lead to rashes
  • Always wipe your baby from front to back. This method should be particularly adopted for baby girls as their urinary tracts are smaller and bacteria can easily pass into their urinary bladder via vagina, thereby making them more susceptible to Urinary Tract Infection or UTI
  • Lift your baby's legs for better visibility and efficient cleaning
  • Also remember to clean the creases of the buttocks and thighs
  • Once you are done with cleaning and wiping, you can either pat dry the area or allow it to air-dry
  • Apply cream or moisturizer to prevent drying of skin.

How to Dispose Diapers?

Here are some tips to dispose used diapers of your baby:

  • Always dispose the faeces in the toilet before putting the diaper into the bin. Otherwise there can be bacterial growth in the disposed diaper and it becomes very smelly
  • Disposable diapers must be sealed in a plastic bag, fastened at the mouth and then disposed in the bin
  • Never flush a disposable diaper, as it may get stuck in the toilet

How to Clean Re-usable Diapers?

Here are some tips to clean your baby’s re-usable diapers:

  • For cleaning re-usable diapers use detergents that do not contain any dye or fragrance
  • Do not use strong detergents or bleach for baby nappies as they can irritate the highly sensitive skin of your baby
  • Wash the nappy thoroughly to remove any traces of urine and faecal bacteria from stool.
  • Soak the nappies in a disinfectant for a few moments as a final rinse
  • Preferably sun dry them

Adopt a Washing Routine for Cloth Nappies.

You can fix up a comfortable daily routine for washing your baby’s nappies to avoid doing it every time you change it. Some tips that you may follow for easy nappy washing are:

Separate Buckets for Wet and Soiled Nappies. Maintain two separate buckets for wet and soiled nappies. Fill up both the buckets with sterilizing solution each morning and soak the nappies in them through the day. At the end of the day or next morning you can wash them all together and dry them out. But for this you need to keep an abundant supply of nappies at hand to be used through the day.

Properly Remove Faeces Before Soaking Nappies. Before putting soiled nappies in the bucket remove as much faeces as you can down the lavatory.

Use Cold Water for Wet Nappies. Wet nappies should be rinsed in cold water and soap, wrung out and then added to the bucket.

Make Your Baby Nappy Happy.

You can ensure your baby’s happiness and well being by following a hygienic nappy/diaper routine for her. Not only can this prevent her from infections and nappy rashes but it also keeps her fresh and smiling all day long.
