Imitation: Way of learning

Imitation is your baby’s way of learning new things and gaining knowledge. Encourage imitation in your child as it helps to develop his or her speech, language, face-to-face interaction and brain function.

No need of buying new games every day. You can utilise common household items such as clock, phone for imitation activities.

Here are a few activities that can encourage imitative behaviour in
your toddler:

At 1 Year

Repeating songs, chants and nursery rhymes.

Clap your hands and also encourage your child to clap his or her hand.

Teach him or her to say goodbye by waving hands.

Cheer your kid for making vowel or consonant-vowel like sounds such as ‘ma ma’, ‘da da’, ‘pa pa’, etc.

Between 1-2 Years

Start counting different objects such as apples, pencils, balls etc and involve your child in this counting game.

Introduce your child to various animal sounds and each sound links an animal. For example, cat does ‘mew mew’ or dog says ‘wou wou’ or lion roars.

Take your child to garden and show different colour flowers. Thus, he or she can easily identify colours.

Between 2-3 Years

Playing doll games: Hugging, kissing the doll, combing her hair, giving her a bath

Marching in a circle banging on drums

Playing tea party games: Pretending to set the table, cook, pour coffee, stir.

Playing puppet games

Make this imitation session fun filled and exciting for you and your child by adding new games or gestures.
