Common problems and thier solutions during pregnancy

Here is a brief introduction to the most common problems you might face during pregnancy and their solution.

Nausea and Vomiting:

Arise slowly in the morning and eat something like dry toast or a plain biscuit before you fully get up. Get plenty of rest and sleep whenever you can. Eat small meals often rather than large meals and have plenty of fluids. Remember not to stop eating as it’ll only worsen the sickness.

Pubic Joint pain:

Consult your doctor, s/he may refer you to a physiotherapist to be fitted with a support belt.


Eat little and often rather than having large meals. Limit having fluids during mealtimes and eat slowly. Do not bend or lie down immediately after a meal, and make sure that you eat your evening meal at least 2 hours before bedtime.


Drinking a glass of plain cold milk will help you get over it.  To prevent heartburn, avoid heavy, greasy meals for dinner. And please do not take antacid tablets before checking with your doctor first.


Add lots of fibers to your diet from whole grains, fruits and vegetables. Make sure you drink lots of water.

Water retention:

Regular leg massage is helpful. So is avoiding extra table salt in the diet!

Stretch marks:

Eating a diet rich in Vitamin E and applying oil on your skin daily can help prevent these.


Regular, gentle exercise like ankle and leg movements will improve your circulation and may help prevent cramps from occurring.

Back pain:

Wear flat shoes; maintain a good posture; avoid one posture for long durations and don’t lift heavy weights. Taking warm baths and gentle massage are also helpful in easing low back pain.

High Blood Pressure:

Exercise regularly, have a nutritious diet that includes fish and plenty of fresh fruits and veggies. Try and avoid salt rich foods like pickles and papads as salt is not considered very good in high BP.


Get up slowly if you’ve been sitting or lying down. If you feel faint when standing still, find a seat quickly and let the feeling pass. If it doesn’t, lie down on your side. If you feel faint while lying on your back, turn on your side. Remember, you should not lie flat on your back at any time in later pregnancy or during labour.

Frequent Urination:

Keep drinking plenty of water. Do not drink less as this can lead to an infected urinary tract.


Wearing loose clothing and avoiding synthetic materials may be of help.

Feeling hot:

Wear loose clothing made of natural fibres like cotton, as these are more absorbent and ‘breathe’ more than synthetic fibres. Keep your room cool and bathe frequently as it helps you feel fresh.


Have a diet that is high on fibre. For example, you can include whole meal breads, fruits and vegetables. Also remember to have plenty of water during the day. This will prevent constipation and prevent piles from getting worse.


During the later stages of pregnancy, it could become difficult to get a good night’s sleep. It might be more comfortable to lie on one side with a pillow under your tummy and another between your knees.

Skin and hair changes:

Use a good, high-factor sunscreen and don’t stay in the sun for very long. Eating foods containing Omega-3 fatty acids like fish, nuts and seeds will help with dry, itchy skin. Hair growth is also likely to increase in pregnancy. After your little one is born, it may seem as if you are losing a lot of hair. In fact, you will simply be losing the extra hair that you grew during pregnancy.


The only solution is to rest as much as possible. Make time to sit with your feet up during the day and accept any offers of help. This is really the time when you should agree to a queen’s treatment from your family!

Swollen ankles, feet and fingers:

Do these simple things: avoid standing for long periods, wear comfortable shoes and try to rest for an hour a day with your feet raised up on a few pillows.

Always remember to take your Doctor’s advice as s/he is the best person to take care of any of these problems.
