You have to breastfeed your baby on demand, which means as often as your baby wants.
Why on Demand?
On demand feeding helps establish a good milk supply and this in turn promotes healthy growth in your baby. Demand feeding also helps prevent breast engorgement.
How often would it be?
You may have to feed your baby every 2-3 hours.
Your baby’s tummy is approximately the size of an almond, so its capacity is very small.Breast milk is easily digested and hence your baby gets hungry soon. Once your baby is hungry, he or she may show some signs of hunger like putting fingers in his or her mouth or making sucking noises. Crying may be the last sign given by your baby.
So try and recognise the initial signs of hunger in your baby.
How Long Should I Breastfeed?
Breastfeed for at least ten minutes at each breast during a single feed.
Should you feed On Demand during Night?
Yes. Your baby may wake up at night if he or she is hungry. So you have to feed your baby at night.
What if the Baby is Sleeping For Long?
If your baby doesn’t wake up for the feed after 2-3 hours, you will have to wake your baby up and feed him or her.
You will soon get used to your baby’s hunger pattern and both of you will get adjusted to the feeding schedule by six weeks.
