Have you come across advertisements that say highly nutritious organic food or 100% organic food? Lately, organic food is gaining popularity as compared to the conventional or inorganic food. Due to its high nutritive value, parents are often attracted towards organic foods to feed their babies. But, what is organic food? In organic agriculture, fewer chemicals are used to produce crops. And, there is an absence of veterinary medicines such as antibiotics in rearing animals. A product labelled as organic food should be free of artificial food additives. These crops are grown using natural fertilizers such as manure to improve the growth of the plant. Fruits, vegetables, grains, dairy products, and meat are some of the commonly available organic foods.

As a parent, you would want your baby's diet to be highly nutritious. Below are some of the benefits of organic foods if you are planning to increase the nutritional value in your baby's diet.

Less Use of Pesticides

When babies complete six months of age, solid foods become a part of their diet. During this period, a baby's diet consists mainly of fruits and vegetables alongside breastmilk because of which they are vulnerable to toxins and chemicals found in these foods. Opting for organic foods can help in decreasing the toxic count and will lower the chances of illness.

Also, organic foods are known for their better taste as they are plucked only when ripped rather conventional fruits and vegetables that are available all year around.

Improves Cognitive Development  

Studies have shown that certain pesticides have adverse effects on children’s cognitive development. For instance, preservatives such as benzoic acid can increase hyperactivity in children suffering with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Certain pesticides have said to be neurotoxic in nature. Organic food contains higher amounts of Omega-3 fatty acids and alpha-linoleic acid (ALA) which are vital nutrients in improving a child’s mental health.

Rich in Antioxidants

Organic foods are rich in antioxidants. Antioxidants are found in healthy food and especially in vividly hued like bell peppers, red cabbage, carrots, sweets potatoes, berries, watermelons. These vitamins and other nutrients protect your child’s cells from the damaging effects of free radicals. Free radicals are by-products of digestion and toxins in the air that can disrupt your child's health.

What to do when you can’t afford organic food?

Organic foods are generally priced higher than non-organic foods.  If you are unable to purchase organic foods due to unavailability or because you can’t afford it, then you can ensure your baby gets adequate nutrients by preparing meals using fresh and wholesome vegetables and fruits. Always check the authenticity while picking an organic product. While choosing organic finger foods, identify if there are any additional sweeteners etc. as this can cause teeth decay.
