Beating the summer heat during your pregnancy

Summers are getting hotter and it’s getting more and more unbearable for all of us, more so for you when you are pregnant.

When the little one’s still within, working around gets more and more difficult because of the heat. Nature won’t listen to your prayers, but you can do a lot to reduce the pinch of heat.

Take cool showers as often as you can: Nothing beats a relaxing shower in cool water. Take up the number to as many as 4 times a day if you want. It cools your body down substantially.

Run tap water on your feet and wrists: Keep wetting your feet and wrists with running tap water. It relaxes your muscles and cool you down.

Try methods to cool the room: Ensure that the room you stay in most is dark and cool. A pleasant environment does a lot to relax your body. Cover the windows with wooden or bamboo chicks to keep the sun out. You can also try the age-old practice of hanging khus sheets from your doors and windows. Occasionally spray water on them, and the room magically cools down.

Must-keep things when you go out: You must avoid going out during the afternoons when the sun is at its hottest. If you must, then arm yourself with a water bottle and an umbrella. Also, don’t forget to apply sunscreen before you go out. You need to look your best during pregnancy.

Never get dehydrated: Drink enough water and other healthy fluids and juices to keep you well hydrated. A bout of dehydration and heatstroke is the last thing you want during your pregnancy. Avoid carbonated drinks and opt for fluids like coconut water, buttermilk, aampanna, lemonade, vegetable juices, badam milk, other fresh fruit juices, khus sharbat, rose sharbat etc. You can also try frozen cubes of juices.

Get enough sleep and stay calm: Your pregnancy is the most vital time when both your body and mind need to be calm and relaxed. Indulge in enough sleep. Stay peaceful. A short nap in the afternoons is always a good idea.

Exercise only when it’s cool: Do your bit of physical workout only when the sun is down and in an environment that is cool enough. Keep the workout light and cheerful. Do not stress yourself out.

Reduce your workload: Your pregnancy is your dream time, especially when it comes to your work load. It’s the best excuse to lessen the amount of time and devotion that you otherwise invest in your work. Do not hesitate to ask for help when you know you need it. Share your work with your partner, family or friends.

Buy lots of cotton clothes: Pregnancy anyway makes you shop for clothes as you keep growing out of your older ones. Invest in light coloured cotton, khadi and linen clothing that let your body breath, as opposed to synthetic that does not allow air to pass through.

These are the times when you need to be more cautious about the heat. It’s easy to tackle when you know the tricks. Follow them and keep your cool to enjoy a chilled out pregnancy!
